Statement Poster:

Helvetica, Larger Than Life

Statement posters practice “staking out, articulating, and amplifying critical positions” and take inspiration from the long history of type-only political posters. This poster uses irony and hyperbole to question the authoritative, ‘neutral’ values that the typeface Helvetica is meant to represent. The typeface is here distorted into an ambiguous postmodern form that is inflated and becomes comical. The work is inspired by Jen Wang’s 2016 article titled Now you see it. Helvetica, Modernism and the Status Quo of Design
