Moth & Rabbit

Perfumes

Elke Filpes and Christian Choi launched Moth and Rabbit, an experimental perfume company, in Berlin in 2016, with the goal of translating stories and emotions into olfactory products and experiences.

The production of scent must begin by seeking for new olfactory inspirations that expand the significance of smells in order to generate a new awareness for perfumes in the minds and hearts of modern consumers.  Extraordinary filmmakers, artists, and individuals who use their bodies of work to communicate distinctive stories serve as an inspiration to the perfumer, who turns exceptional stories into exceptional perfumes.

For the redesign of the MAR Perfumery packaging and brand identity, I employed ten distinct colors that convey the mood of each film that the fragrances are named after. The new logo sihouette acts as a recognisable visual identity while also offering a window into the cinematic universe that the fragrance aspires to portray through aroma.  Negative space is employed to give the bottle a light and airy sensation, allowing the consumer to focus on the aesthetic, olfactory, and narrative value of each fragrance.

No.1 Parasite

“Parasite tells a sotry that takes the complicated feelings that the indentured worker have for their employers and conducts it into a veritable symphony of respect and contempt. It opens up with a fresh cut grass note and goes over in a shower of freesia and lily of the valley as the smiles twist into grimaces when the real world splatters across the manicured lawn.

The richness of patchouli and the smoky guaiac wood expresses the tneder musing on familial love that emerges and the bitter all too late realisation that you can’t buy home.”

No.2 Love Exposure

“A story told with a certain kind of humor and tension that builds up and leads you to an unforseeable ending. Love. A delicate floral scent, somehow innocent, but strong: lust. Clean, but kinky animal notes which run through the scent; costus, indol, cumin and ambergris: violence. The surprising bloody note from the buchu oil, bay and metallic notes: sex. A smell of hot wet skin: religion.”

No.3 Daisies

“I got inspired by the characters’ colorful acts of rebellion; Daisies the scent, opens up with an orchestra of green, fruity and edible notes that capture the opulence and gluttony of bourgeois culture.

The heart has a society of sweets and florals that decay in a dramatic and witty twist of wood, leather and opoponax resin in the base.”

No.4 Dreamers

“A scent with strong ‘60s elements that responds to specific moments of voyeurism, sexual experimentation and youth. The beautiful smell of bathroom rituals and the innocence of youth experimental and sensual like qualities; there is something intense and cool in it.”

No.5 The Virgin

“A scent with strong 70’s elements that responds to specific moments of voyeurism, softness and innocence in the film. The beautiful smell of lipstick and make up and a virgin’s young, fresh and teeny like qualities ... The lingerie, the underwear ... There‘s something silky, cool and smooth in it.”

No.6 Enter the Void

“A transcendental and darkly erotic fragrance with a surprising herbal green aromatic top note. The fragrance sparks like the neon lights illuminating the alley ways of the Tokyo underworld. Think sexy, sensual, psychedelic and addictive.”

No.7 Blowup

“There are several elements and moments in the film Blow Up that resonated with me deeply and that prompted me to create an olfactive response. From repeating textures of wood in the photographers car and loft, antiques, chemicals in the dark room, dusty feathers, green leaves in the park and marijuana. However, the moment that resonated with me most and served as an inspiration for this fragrance is the scene with the oil painting. The oil painting becomes a metaphor reality vs fantasy.”

No.8 Duke of Burgundy

“I wanted to get the sensuality of the film in this fragrance - very feminine orientated. The idea was to get this soft sensual odor. Very musky, clean with a sly touch of shoe polish (bubble scene, waxing). There‘s something fruity in it that gives the scent a sensual warm sex feeling. The lingerie, the underwear... there‘s something silky, cool and smooth in it.”

No.9 Dolls

“A fragrance carried by vivid, extravagant colours and a surrealistic story about uncompromising love: all consuming and bordering insanity. A heavy perfume, based on animalistic notes interrupted by the subtle and light smell of snow; so repulsive in smell, so attractive in colours, so unreal.”

No.10 Mood Indigo

“For me the film L’écume Des Jours as a whole was carried by Jazz music; I like this ambiance. The flowers play a strong role (water lily) the film which starts gay and luminous turns and becomes very dark! The fragrance is based on dark woody notes with a lot of incense, which represents the Jazz music for me. There is a short passage in the fragrance, where you smell the light, bright water lily. The chamomile and red pepper give rhythm and movement to the whole accord.”
